I AM writing to express my dismay at the deliberate misinformation being spread by the Conservative Party in Wirral about changes to bin collections.

As you reported in your newspaper last month, I could not have been clearer, Wirral Council will not be introducing three weekly bin collections.

And yet we have Tory politicians continuing to claim the council is planning to impose these changes.

I've even heard a rumour Wirral Council is going to force residents to have five bins.

None of this is true.

I can see just one reason for the tired Tories recycling this same old rubbish - to try to scare people with incorrect information for their own electoral advantage.

Put simply, they appear to be using 'fake news' to try to win votes in next May's local elections.

As a council we are under pressure by the Government to recycle more residential waste – an ambition I share.

But doing so is expensive and the Government target is, as ever, unfunded.

This same Government has slashed Wirral council's funding £200m since 2010.

Experts claim one way of increasing recycling is to restrict the collection of general waste to every three weeks.

Many Tory councils plan to adopt this policy.

But as the Labour cabinet member for environment I say again we will not be making these changes.
