AS the dust settles on this year’s Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, it is with great pleasure that I write to the Wirral Globe readers with a huge thank you for all the kind donations this year.

Indeed, on behalf of the Poppy Appeal Organiser of the Birkenhead Branch, Mrs Tanya Cawood and all the volunteers, I can announce that to date we raised over £61,000.

This is an amazing amount, bearing in mind the current economic uncertainties.

As a branch we cover a relatively large area of North Wirral and we have worked hard to get the poppy collection tins out to locations.

A lot of work goes into the organisation of the appeal, so we are already appealing for volunteers for the 2018 Poppy Appeal, especially veterans.

As a branch we are fortunate to be located within the founder member branch, Sir Frederick Lister House on Park Road East, Birkenhead.

This historical building also has its own memorial to Birkenhead’s First World War fallen, which was unveiled by the Earl of Wessex, HRH Prince Edward in 2014.

We are open most afternoons and anyone is more than welcome to pop in for tea and biscuits.

We can also be contacted on 652 2774. Thank you all so much again for your support and generosity.
