I HAVE just read in the Globe that Merseyrail is planning to introduce driver-only trains in 2020, with some trains, but not all, having a "customer service" member of staff on board, too.
In other words, some trains will run with only one staff member – the driver.
Currently all trains have a guard who checks tickets and frequently walks through the carriages to check there are no problems occurring.
How on earth will a solitary driver be able to do that? Answer – he or she won't.
I, for one, am very unhappy with this proposal and extremely irritated by Cllr Liam Robinson complacently stating that "in an ideal world we'd like to have a second member of staff on every train ... but there aren't the resources to do that."
Poppycock!
Rearrange your resources, councillor, in the interests of customers’ safety and peace of mind.
You’re still going to be collecting fares, aren’t you?
