RECENTLY one of my elderly neighbours dropped a cigarette end outside our local newsagent’s shop.

She was promptly issued with a fine of £80 for the ‘cardinal sin’ of littering. While I fully appreciate there has to be a clamp-down on the public dropping litter, to deliberately target a frail, 80-year-old lady in this way is a cowardly act.

My neighbour was extremely upset when given the fine which, as a pensioner, she can can ill-afford. Yet another example of the vulnerable in our society being targeted.
