Brimstage Road 'is being destroyed by juggernauts'
WHEN Aldi opened their distribution depot in Neston, Wirral Council banned articulated lorries from Barnston Road and Thornton Common Road.
The result is these huge lorries have been forced onto Brimstage Road from Clatterbridge to the Gayton roundabout.
Not only are residents awakened before dawn with these juggernauts thundering past our houses, but the road itself is being destroyed.
The road surface and substructure in part is crumbling, leading to pot-holes, deep ridges, cracks and loose materials on the carriageway.
It now appears that Wirral Council have given up repairing the road and all they now do is put up signs saying the road is damaged.
This narrow country road was reconstructed only five or so years ago, but was obviously not built to carry such heavy traffic. What we need to know is why Brimstage Road was made to carry all this extra heavy traffic. Whycan't Barnston Road and Thornton Common Road share the load?
What is Wirral Council now going to do, firstly to repair Brimstage Road, then to stop the same thing happening in the future?

Duncan raises a really important point; Wirral Council have in effect filtered all the lorries down Brimstage road by blocking off Thornton Hough and Barnston. For the Highways department (part of the Technical Services department run by David Green) to just put up signs saying the road is in disrepair is unacceptable, and I will be raising this matter with my elected MP.
Wirral Council and Mr Green should have blocked off lorries from using the A5137 given that is a very narrow country road, and cannot cope with the amount of lorries currently using it. They should also have contacted Cheshire Council to make sure lorries use the A540 to reach the distribution site.
Come on Mr Green, pull your finger out. To just put up signs saying dangerous road is unacceptable!

Oops, double comment. I would like to add that Mr Green should have also foreseen this problem given that it was pretty obvious that the road was going to be used more and more by lorries after the restrictions went up elsewhere. Could the Wirral Globe perhaps try and give this some publicity as the road is in a very precarious state at the moment, and is not really safe for cars to use.

Calm down! What's that got to do with the issue of lorries wrecking our roads? You're right about the council not giving a ****, but at least you get some money spent on you- the council gives no money to any place whose name doesn't start with birkenhead.

The fact remains that the Aldi distribution centre site in Neston is unsuitable and should never have been put there in the first place. All links between the A540 and Birkenhead are problematic; the A5137 link is just as unsuitable for HGV traffic as the B5136 (Thornton Common Road) and A551 (Barnston Road). The best solution would have been for the centre to be sited adjacent to the M53 or A41. The traffic planners should have forecast the problems before giving the centre the go-ahead.

That's a good point David. Both Cheshire and Wirral Council should have come to this arrangement when the plans to build the distribution centre at Neston were drawn up. Instead Cheshire Council gave permission for it to be built on the A540, Wirral Council objected, but had no jurisdiction. There needs to be more co-operation on those matters. Instead w have a situation were it is Wirral roads that are taking the strain of Lorries heading for a distribution centre given permission by another council. Not the first time that Heswall and surrounding areas have been made to pay for other people's convenience.
