WIRRAL AC's track and field season got underway with the first round of the Mersey Division of the National Junior League at Stanney Oaks.
Given the club's strength over the recent cross country season, it was no surprise that the best performances came in the middle distance events . . .
Tom Madden seized the initiative on the first lap of the 800m, coming home in 2mins 3.9secs, with an improved Rory Lott hanging on for the runner-up spot a couple of seconds back.

Andrew Gawne ran a well-judged race to move through the 1500m field, though his challenge for second faded in the closing stages and he had to settle for third spot in 4mins 18secs.
Jess Schofield also finished third in her 1500m in 5mins 8.7secs.
In the 3000m, Stephen Duckers took third in the 3000m in 9mins 22.5secs behind David Forrester (St Helens Sutton AC), a member of the GB team in the World Junior Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh last month. Sean Egan was some eight seconds back in fourth place.
In hopefully sunny climes, Becky McLinden represented the Northern Athletics in the Malta International, finishing fourth in the 200m in 26.15secs.
Another Wirral resident, Andrew Burgess, now with Sale Harriers Manchester, won the long jump in a new personal best of 7metres exactly.
