THE local track and field season got under way with two events organised by Liverpool Harriers at Wavertree.
This year, the Ernie Gallagher Memorial Meeting for younger athletes supplemented the long-established Melbourne Trophy meeting, at which the traditional wintry weather did not appear to dampen the enthusiasm of the competitors at the start of a new season.

Sophie Money won a competitive 100m in the Year 8 & 9 age group in 13.3secs after gaining fourth place in the 200m. Max Jeffers had a comfortable win the Year 8 & 9 800m in 2mins 11.7secs, while Matt Westby took the Year 7 1500m in 5mins 15.9secs.
At the Melbourne Trophy, successes came in the sprints with Becky McLinden taking the Under-20 200m in 25.6secs and Julie Money the Senior 100m in 13.4secs.
Kate Brick (Under-20 100m), Jake Collins (Under-17 200m) and Sid Srinivas (Under-17 100m Hurdles) finished second in their events.
At the more distant venue of Providence, Rhode Island, Chris Smith went to the top of the UK Under-20 rankings at 800m with a time of 1min 53.07secs.
Best placed Wirral finisher in the London Marathon was Kevin Buxton in 2hrs 48mins - eighth fastest in the 50-54 age group and 397th out of the 34,000 who reached the finish line.
