Oaks regain Wirral Badminton League premiership title – just!

SO, at last, it is congratulations to Cheshire Oaks, who regained their Wirral Badminton League Premiership title with a last gasp effort in the final match of the season.

It was expected to be tight and, when Oaks captain Helen Davies was selected to play in Finland on the night of the decider, it appeared to give Millbrook the edge, but they also had to field three reserves, so it was literally anyone's game - and either club's title.

Before the match, it was known that Millbrook had to win with at least a five point advantage - and their 12-8 victory on the night shows how close it eventually was.

Millbrook finished by winning all four mixed doubles but conceded a couple of sets to reduce the margin to four, and lost the title by 171 points to their 170. One fewer, and the title would have stayed with Millbrook, who had fewer against!

Both clubs deserve praise for their play over the year - it is sad that there can only be one winner, as there has been nothing between them since day one.

The other title decided was in Division Two South, where St Andrews (Meols) recorded a bloodless win over a depleted St Catherine's - their 10-6 victory taking them just three points clear of long time leaders St Peters.

There is still a keen fight for the Division Three South title. Neston have rocketed up to lead the table, thanks to a 13-5 success over Seaview, while St Andrews/Peninsula moved into second place with a 4-2 defeat of Upton Victory Hall, leaving previous promotion favourites Rock Ferry and Watergate in third and fourth places.

It is good to see Seaview and West Kirby, who have not had much success in this competitive division, continuing in their quest for victory - as they have each other to play twice, someone is likely to succeed.

RESULTS (up to and including April 4):-

Premier Division:
Millbrook 12, Cheshire Oaks 8.

Division One North: Oval 11, Moreton/Seacombe 8; Capenhurst/Vauxhall 3, Claremount 15.

Division Two North: Barnston 14, St Catherine's 3.

Division Two South: St Catherine's 6, St Andrews (Meols) 10.

Division Three South: St Andrews (Peninsula) 14, Upton Victory Hall B' 2; Neston 13, Seaview 5.
