Wirral schoolboy Joshua is national 60-metre champion


A SCHOOLBOY from Wirral has become the 60-metres record holder in a national athletics final.

Joshua Solomon-Davies, aged nine, from Redcourt School in Birkenhead, earned his title in a record time of nine seconds flat in the year four category of the 47th National Schools Athletics Finals at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham on Wednesday June 24.

He also picked up a second medal for the Long Jump, covering a distance of three metres and 55cm.

Further medal success was achieved by Jonathan Nelson, 10 and Lydia Reynolds 11 winning bronze. Jonathan in the year five Long Jump (3m 88cm) and Lydia in the Year six 600 metres final.

The pupils had previously won the regional heats and finals at Robin Park in Wigan on June 10.

In total 300 schools from across England competed in all stages of this competition with the North of England finishing runners up in the final.

For Joshua, this was his second national championship win – for two different countries.

Joshua, who lives in Birkenhead, was born in St Lucia, West Indies where he qualified to compete in their national primary schools athletics finals which took place on March 12. He went on to win the 135 metres final.

Miss Rachael Kennerley, Redcourt's athletics coach, said: "I am immensely proud of the children's commitment and achievement.

"Redcourt has a strong athletics tradition and it's fantastic that we have earned success at national level."
