Sailing: Local Regatta programme gets off to a good start at Royal Mersey Yacht Club

There were no Offshore yachts with the fleet having gone off the previous night in Liverpool/Tranmere’s Isle of Man Midnight race.

The Operas at Hoylake and the dinghies in the Dee Estuary competed on Sunday.

Gavin Melling in La Tosca headed the Opera fleet.

On the Estuary James Douglas took the Dart Catamaran prize in Bogtrotter II after two races and the leading Handicap Catamaran was a Hurricane helmed by Andrew Potter.

The 'Southport Corinthian' trophy is perhaps not so oddly named. The Corinthians formed a yacht club in 1884 based at the pier head, Southport. Most of their members were preoccupied with cruising and social activities. This led to a disagreement with those keen on racing and in 1894 the West Lancashire Yacht Club was formed and the SCYC was later to fail. In 1898 WLYC formed a new one design class, the Seabird Half Rater and of course the class still compete for the SCYC trophy at Royal Mersey each year at their regatta.
