Sailing: Midnight race from the Mersey to the Isle of Man


A fleet of twenty two yachts took part in the Tranmere Sailing Club/Liverpool Yacht Club Isle of Man Midnight Race from the Mersey to Douglas.

It was a slow trip with the yachts becalmed at times. Neil Thomas was first home in Mighty Max II in a time of just over fourteen and a half hours with the last boat crossing the line in fractionally over seventeen hours.

The overall winner was the GK 24 Di-Rich owned by Andy Napper and Annie Ward who lifted the Grand Challenge Cup and also the Puffin Cup for IRC Class Three.

The Class Two winner was Paul Hampson in a Sigma 33 Magic Moments which earned him the Milburn Trophy.

Class One and the 1894 Cup went to the quarter tonner Ragtime IV owned by Steve Carruthers and Geoff Whittaker.

Results: Class One: 1. Ragtime IV (S.Carruthers); 2. Pandanova II (D.Matthews); 3. Sleeper (J.Carrier).

Class Two: 1. Magic Moments (P.Hampson); 2. Skukusa (S.Lofthouse); 3. Musketeer (M.Inman).

Class Three: 1. Di-Rich (A.Napper); 2. Tango (R.Baldwin); 3. Night Flyer (T.Goodman).

Overall: 1.Di-Rich; 2. Tango; 3. Night Flyer.
