Wirral Athletics

AFTER several lean years in the Liverpool and District Cross Country Union Championships, the Wirral AC Senior team packed well to place their six counters in the first 30 to finish a comfortable second behind Liverpool Harriers in Clarke Gardens, with Liverpool Running Club narrowly relegating Southport Waterloo AC to fourth.

The shield for the individual winner, presented to the Union by Wirral AC in the 1970s in the memory of George Grant, a Wirral member and Union Treasurer, was won in impressive style by John McCole of Liverpool Harriers, who took an early lead and never looked under pressure.

Xavier Desse, making a welcome appearance on the country, was always well placed and hung on well in the closing stages of the five and half mile course to be the leading Wirral finisher in tenth.

Mark Hulmston moved through after a cautious start to finish 13th with Dave Norman a further 30 seconds adrift in 16th.

John Hunt was not at his best, but battled gamely for 24th, one place ahead of Graham Ratcliffe. Kevin Keating completed the count in 27th.

Among the other Wirral participants, Jeannette Fox was seventh woman to finish.
