OXTON recorded their first-ever national league victory on Sunday by beating second-placed Doncaster 4-2.

Leading scorer Ali McKenzie failed a late fitness test but Jonathan Hodgkinson was passed fit.

The visitors as expected started the game in confident mood with some good build-up play but didn't trouble Olly Green in the home goal due to some excellent defending.

The home side started to take control of the game midway through the first half and took the lead via Jonathan Hodgkinson from a well-worked short corner.

Oxton's tails were now up and the ball was being moved around well and at good pace.

Wirral Globe:

Joe Hillyer found Mark Worrall with a sublime cross-field reverse stick pass but as he looked to find his brother Neil for a simple tap in, a defender unfortunately got the faintest of touches to deny a certain goal.

The crucial second goal arrived just before half time when Gordon Moore rolled back the years to apply a neat finish after a great team build up.

Oxton extended their lead immediately into the second half as the ball arrived at Moore in the D without the opposition touching it.

The former Scottish international dummied the defender and found the ball on his back hand and applied a deft finish over the advancing keeper.

There was no time to settle though as Doncaster immediately reduced the three-goal deficit with a finish from a narrow angle from Tim Shelley.

Oxton restored their three-goal advantage on 42 minutes when Mark Worrall crashed the ball home with a powerful reverse stick finish after another great build up.

Doncaster refused to give up though and five minutes later were back in it with Joshua Oades applying the finish.

Wirral Globe:

The game became a little end to end as both sides struggled to retain possession.

Neither keeper was greatly troubled though with the experienced central defensive pairing of Russell Hornby and Nikolas Heyes protecting the home side's goal well.

There were no further goals and the final whistle was met with cheers from the home supporters as a historic victory was recorded.

There is no fixture this week with league leaders Durham University arriving the following week for their fixture.

The match is a 1.30pm start and all support is welcome.
