A MAJOR international martial arts championship is planned for Wirral later this year – and its organisers need your help with funding.

The 7th International Chinese Martial Arts [Wushu] Championship is planned to take place at the Oval leisure centre in Bebington on October 23.

Its judging panel features Master Xingbo Liu, who trained at the Shaolin Temple, is an accomplished judge of Chinese kick-boxing and was awarded Wirral sporting lifetime achievement in 2014.

The event is being organised by Wirral-based martial arts group China Spirit UK and will cost £15,000 to stage.

A spokeswoman for the group said: "This event has never been held outside London before.

"Our members have attended these competitions in previous years and returned with medals. It is now our privilege to host the event this year.

"Last year, more than 200 competitors took part, this year more are expected as interest has come from China, the USA and Hungary, as well as UK.

"The club wants to show that they are proud to host this special event by including a Wirral landmark on the winners' medals.

"Our members are working hard to raise the money necessary to fund the event, but are now looking for sponsorship and support."
