MEN'S international pro tennis returns to Wirral this weekend, with Wimbledon doubles champion Freddie Nielson set to appear.

Taking place at Wirral Tennis and Leisure Centre from Sunday, March 15 until Saturday, March 21, the Aegon GB Pro-Series boasts an entry list featuring a great blend of British and overseas players.

This year's entry list includes The Dane - a big Liverpool fan - who will be making his first appearance at the centre.

Nielson, who became Wimbledon doubles champion in 2012 has had a top 20 career high doubles ranking and has risen more than 300 places in the singles ranking since the end of 2013.

The Aegon GB Pro-Series Wirral is an ITF Pro Circuit Men's $15k event.

All the world’s top players sharpened their pro careers at this level, and a number of the players in action at the Wirral are steadily working their way up the rankings in their quest to reach the top.

The Dutch duo of Antal Van Der Duim, and Boy Westerhof head the men’s singles entry list, while 2012 Wirral champion, Yannick Mertens completes the trio of players ranked inside the world’s top 300.

The strong oversees contingent also includes Adrien Bossel, who in the absence of Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka, will arrive on the Wirral fresh from Davis Cup world group duty in the Switzerland v Belguim tie.

The British players in action are headed up by Marcus Willis, Josh Milton, and David Rice, the current British number’s 10, 11, and 12 respectively.

In addition, 23 year old Tom Farquharson is returning to defend his title from 2014, and former British number three Dan Evans, who is currently on the road back from injury, will also be in action on The Wirral.

Big hitting Josh Ward-Hibbert, will be another player to watch out for.

The 21 year old from Nottingham, holds the record for the fastest serve hit by a junior at Wimbledon, and also won the Australian Open junior doubles title in 2012, reaching the quarter-finals in the same year.

The men’s qualifying event which is Sunday and Monday has a great deal of local interest with Jordan McCulloch (Ellesmere Port), Imran Aswat (Chorley), Dave Porter (Cheadle Hulme) and Nick Eeckelaers (Stockport) all on the entry list.

Tournament director Richard Joyner said:  "We’re really looking forward to returning to the Wirral.

"This year’s event is particularly strong, with a great blend of British and overseas players, plus a number of Cheshire and Lancashire players involved in qualifying.

"It’s also great to see a Wimbledon doubles champion with us. I’m sure Freddie will be looking to take in a Liverpool match whilst here too."

Joyner added: "The whole week is a great way to see close up some of the world’s up and coming players."

Men’s qualifying is Sunday, March 15 and Monday, March 16, with the main draw Tuesday, March 17 to Saturday, March 21.
