THE Globe is calling on football fans in Wirral to get behind Tranmere Rovers this Saturday and cheer them on to victory in what is the biggest game of their season.

Micky Mellon's Rovers are just 90 minutes away from reaching the National League playoff final at Wembley, where the winner will be promoted to the holy grail of the Football League.

All that stands between the Whites and another trip to the national stadium is the winner of Aldershot Town v Ebbsfleet United, who will contest a playoff eliminator match tonight (7pm).

A crowd in excess of 12,000 is anticipated for the semi-final but there is a growing feeling that the club can go one better and with your help make it a total sell-out.

Tickets have already been flying out of Prenton Park before the opposition has even been determined, but such is the determination to see Tranmere return to the Football League the stage is set for a thrilling semi-final in front of a bumper crowd fitting of such an occasion.

Rovers narrowly missed out on promotion last season, when they suffered Wembley heartache in a 3-1 defeat to Forest Green Rovers in the final.

Just like in 2016/17, they have finished the National League campaign in second place only just missing out on automatic promotion.

Once again they will have to try and do it the hard way instead.

Aldershot were Tranmere's opponents in the playoff semi-finals last season, with Rovers defeating them 5-2 on aggregate over two legs.

This year the rules have changed however, with two extra teams qualifying for the playoffs.

As Tranmere finished second, they automatically advance to the semi-finals with home advantage in a one-leg winner-takes-all 90 minutes clash Although nowhere near as bad as the injury crisis that plagued the squad last season, the Prenton Park club are not without their troubles this time either.

Regular full-back Adam Buxton is facing a race against time to recover from a stomach muscle injury while attacking midfielder Connor Jennings has fallen unwell just as the season reaches the business end and is a major doubt.

With winger Ben Tollitt already ruled out for the rest of the season, Mellon will make full use of his highly experienced squad as they plot a return to League Two, where the club and it’s fiercely loyal supporters deserve to be.

One man who has seen it all in his time at Prenton Park is the club's longest serving current player Liam Ridehalgh.

The Yorkshireman was part of the side that suffered successive relegations from League One into non-league football and also played in the Wembley defeat to Forest Green Rovers last May.

But wiser for his experiences, this time he hopes the outcome will be very different.

Speaking after the Hartlepool match on Saturday he said: "We're going into a good week for training now and we'll be preparing for a very exciting game here at Prenton Park on Saturday.

"We know that we're going to have to be at our best if we're going to go through to the final and that’s what we’ll be looking to do.

"It would mean a lot (to get back to Wembley), especially after last year.

"We were obviously not too pleased after that game.

"But this year we’ve got more experience so hopefully we can go one step further."

The Rovers left-back had a message for the Super White Army and anyone thinking about coming down for the semi-final on Saturday: "Come down and stay positive.

"Be as loud as possible and hopefully we’ll send you home very happy."
