TOP-of-the-table Tranmere Rovers are preparing for what promises to be a tough New Year's Day game against Macclesfield Town.

Micky Mellon's squad faced the same opposition at Prenton Park on Boxing Day, in a game that ended 1-0 for the hosts and took them to the the top of the national league table.

During a press conference at Prenton Park this afternoon, Mellon said that although hoping for a repeat victory at Moss Rose on Sunday, kick-off 3pm, he is fully aware of the threat his squad face.

Assessing this weekend's opponents he said: "Macclesfield are a well organised team.

"We knew they were a good team before we played on Boxing Day, I went and watched them myself.

"They're a good side who want to play football. They have good players and experience as well, you'd have to look hard for a more experienced centre half partnership than the one they have.

"We know it is going to be tough on New Year's Day but we're looking forward to the challenge and we'll go there and play the way we think we need to play in order to get a result.

"We'll have a massive following coming with us.

"We're enjoying our football so we'll look forward to going to Macclesfield and trying to get the three points."
