TRANMERE Rovers' boss Gary Brabin has apologised for the 'embarrassing' performance that cost his squad the game against Woking earlier this week.

During a press conference at Prenton Park ahead of Saturday's away game against Boreham Wood, he said the players were working hard to tackle mistakes that resulted in their 4-1 defeat on Tuesday night.

He said: "Certain aspects of the game weren't good enough and the result wasn't good enough, which was embarrassing for me."

"It's something that we're working hard to put right.

"I don't think too much had to be said after the game on Tuesday.

"That was the first time I publicly had a go at the players, because I felt let down.

"I apologise to the fans, because I'm responsible for putting that team out.

"As nice or as complementary people were about our football in the middle of the pitch, it's about what happens both ends; keeping it out of one goal and putting it in the other. It wasn't good enough.

"I'm the manager of a football club and, at the end of the day, responsible for putting them in the right frame of mind and having them prepared when they go over the white line.

"So you can't blame the players.

"I've had a few apologies from players, which takes a lot to admit."

On his squad he said: "I'm confident in my own ability as a manager and confident in that group of players.

"There's more to come from them and we need to start turning things around quickly. We're certainly under-achieving at the moment.

"They know it wasn't good enough on Tuesday and we are expecting a better response.

"But words are cheap. The best way to apologise to fans is to put in a good performance on Saturday.

"It's okay playing good football but, at the end of the day, there needs to be an end product. Results are the most important thing."

Assessing this weekend's opponents, Boreham Wood, he said: "They have been quite active in the transfer market in the last couple of weeks and have a had couple of good results of late and they'll be full of confidence. There the best games to go into.

"We need to be getting back on track and it doesn't matter who we face, there all difficult games in the league.

"It's a competitive league and is getting stronger at the bottom.

"We're expecting a tough game."
