Tranmere Rovers have parted company with manager Micky Adams by mutual consent following Saturday's 3-0 home defeat by Oxford United.

The 53-year-old left with the club bottom of League Two and in danger of losing their Football League status.

Adams' number two Alan Rogers and academy boss Shaun Garnett have been put in charge for the final two games of the season.

Rovers are one point behind Cheltenham and two adrift of Hartlepool United.

Fans chanted "Adams out" during the Oxford game yesterday and a group of supporters protested outside the ground after the full-time whistle.

Before that there had been an angry exit of hundreds of fans as Oxford hit the net for the third time.

A statement on the Rovers website this afternoon said: "We thank Micky for his work at Tranmere Rovers having taken over the club at a difficult time and wish him all the best for the future.

"The focus of the first team and everybody at the club is now on the fight to the finish with a game at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday, when three points could lift them above both Hartlepool United and Cheltenham Town."

After the crushing defeat, assistant manager Rogers faced the press and said: "The players have got to start taking some responsibility.

"It’s okay everyone pointing fingers at the manager.

"But I was a player - stand up and be counted. Defend set pieces, defend crosses.

"It’s an easy option pointing the finger at the manager.

"These players have got to look at themselves."
