MICKY Adams has been appointed new manager of Tranmere Rovers.

The 52-year-old has been in charge of ten clubs in a managerial career that spans 18 years and began at Fulham in 1996.

He has secured four promotions in that time, including taking Leicester to the Premier League in 2003, twice getting teams promoted out of League Two, and twice being voted third division manager of the season.

Micky will be in the home dugout for the first time at Tranmere’s game against Mansfield on Tuesday.

Assistant manager Matt Gill and Coach Alex Russell will prepare the team for the match at Oxford on Saturday, but Adams will be in attendance to see his new team in action for the first time.

His appointment follows the sacking of Rob Edwards after a disastrous run of results that saw the club sink to bottom of League Two.

Micky said: "I'm delighted to be given the opportunity to manage Tranmere Rovers by the Chairman and Board of Directors.

"The immediate task is to get the Club off the foot of the table. There’s a lot of hard work ahead but it’s a challenge I'm relishing.

"Tranmere is a good club with a proud history and one which shouldn’t be near the bottom of the division.

"In the weeks and months ahead I’ll be doing everything I can to drive the club forward and to a much healthier position."

Tranmere Rovers chairman Mark Palios said: "In the position the club currently finds itself we felt it was important to appoint an experienced manager with good connections and a track record of success in League Two.

"In our present position at the bottom of the League, we don’t have the luxury of the time to allow a new manager to learn his trade.

"Micky has an impressive win ratio, which he has sustained over a long career and often in circumstances where he has had to operate in difficult situations or with limited budgets. His success is no flash in the pan.

"We have acted quickly to fill the post so he has as much time as possible to lift us up the table and to identify his targets to strengthen the squad in the transfer window.”"The extensive work we are undertaking behind the scenes at Tranmere Rovers to provide the Club with a bright future is predicated on us retaining our Football League status.

"That is foremost in our minds, and Micky's appointment is designed to ensure we can continue with our long-term strategy that would ultimately make Tranmere Rovers a successful self-sustainable Football Club."

When Adams took over at Fulham in his first managerial job, the London club were 91st in the Football League. He secured their safety and won promotion in the following season.

He stabilized a cash-strapped Brighton and took them to the Division Three title in 2001, and subsequently oversaw Leicester’s swift return to the Premier League despite the Midlands outfit spending part of the season under a transfer embargo.

Adams moved to Port Vale in 2009 where he spent the last five years, apart from a very brief stint at Sheffield United in 2010.

He resigned earlier this season having guided them to promotion in 2013 and then taken them to a ninth place finish in League One last season.

Adams, who is still a popular figure among Vale supporters, produced the best win ratio of any Port Vale manager since the Second World War during his time at the Club.

Mark Palios added: “The Tranmere fans have been fantastic in supporting the team in recent League games, despite some disappointing results, and this has kept the team fighting to the end of the 90 minutes.

"We are delighted that someone of the pedigree of Micky Adams has agreed to join us to help steer the Club back up the League, where it belongs.

"I am sure that the supporters will continue to play their part in helping Micky and the squad to turn the season around.”
