TRANMERE ROVERS...........0

PLYMOUTH ARGYLE...........1

(Att: 4,952)

MANAGER Rob Edwards admitted Tranmere are in a "disastrous position" as they fell to the foot of the League Two table following defeat by Plymouth Argyle.

A first-half header by Reuben Reid was enough to ensure that Plymouth travelled back to Devon with all three points from Prenton Park.

Edwards made two changes to the lineup which began Tuesday night's Johnstone's Paints Trophy win against Carlisle United.

George Donnelly and new loan signing George Barker came in the side in place of Eliot Richards and Abdulai Baggie, who were named as substitutes.

Goalkeeper Peter Brezovan remained in the side with Owain fon Williams away on international duty with Wales.

Plymouth took the lead on 29 minutes after a sustained spell of possession. Anthony O'Connor swung in a cross from the right and the ball was headed home by Reuben Reid six yards out.

George Barker had his first chance in a Tranmere shirt after 33 minutes. Matt Gill found him 30 yards from goal and the forward, on loan from Swindon Town, turned and hit a powerful shot over the bar.

On 42 minutes, a corner from Jason Koumas from the right found Odejayi's whose effort hit a defender to take the sting off it and McCormick made a comfortable save as the sides went in at the break with the visitors one goal to the good.

Tranmere made a treble substitution with 15 minutes remaining. In came Eliot Richards, Abdulai Baggie and Marc Laird in place of George Donnelly, Matt Gill and Max Power.

Deane Smalley and Reid missed chances to wrap up victory for Plymouth and despite pressure from the home side, they held onto their lead until the final whistle.

Edwards said: "I thought we were dull and too slow on our heels in the first half.

"We want bright players at the club but we've got people looking at the floor and turning their back on the ball.

"We were nowhere near good enough and I told them that at half time. If you start dull you're asking for what you get.

"Jason Koumas was top class and fought for the club but one or two went the other way. Whether I'm here or not, if you've got players in your side who don't want the ball you're in trouble.

"I thought the star of the show today was the supporters. They stuck with the team and were fantastic and I'd like to thank them for that.

"We're in a disastrous position, we're bottom of the league but they showed their pride for the club.

"I'm aware of what they think of me - but I'd like to congratulate them on the way they were today.

"Do I still want the job? Of course I do. Am I still proud to be manager? Of course I am.

"I asked the players today, what are they going to do? This is the future of the club we're talking about.

"They need to shape up and I need to shape up, otherwise it isn't going to work."

Rovers travel to face Oxford Utd next Saturday and with his side now at rock bottom, Edwards knows he desperately needs a victory.
