TRANMERE Rovers manager Rob Edwards could not hide his frustration as his side suffered defeat by bottom-placed club Carlilse Utd.

A second half header from David Amoo earned all three points for the Cumbrians, who were without a win in the league for 15 games.

Amoo got on the end of Danny Grainger's corner to head in the only goal of the match in the 72nd minute.

Before that, Patrick Brough had missed two good chances for the home side.

Striker George Donnelly could have levelled for Rovers late on but fired a shot over from 12 yards out and Tranmere left Brunton Park empty-handed.

Edwards, who set the team up in a 4-4-2 formation, was frustrated with the display: "I was disappointed with the performance.

"We tried to go with two strikers today and didn't have as much of the ball and it was a scrappy performance.

"We had two wide players to help the two full backs and the crosses shouldn't be coming in to our area. We worked at it in midweek but there were too many crosses coming in.

"We've missed chances in the last four or five games and that's why you lose games of football.

"A set piece has cost us last week and cost us this week. It's tough at the moment.

"We've got some young players who are learning on the job. I'm asking more from the older players in terms of know how to help the younger players.

"Just before we conceded the goal we had a free kick and took it short. It was an opportunity to put the ball in the box and put the pressure on them but we made the wrong call.

"We had our chances at 0-0 but our confidence is wafer-thin at the moment and when we went a goal down you could see the players get anxious."

The dejected boss added: "I looked at the programme and the club lost here 4-1 last year.

"The club has been losing matches for far too long.

"I can't kid myself, I'm disappointed with the way we've started the season.

"We need to look forward and start winning some games quickly. I understand what the job is and I'm determined to turn it around."

The result left Rovers down in 20th position in the league table.

Next Saturday they travel to face third-placed Bury, who suffered their first loss of the season to Exeter City yesterday.

Edwards made two changes to the side that started against Exeter last week with Donnelly and Jake Kirby coming in for Cole Stockton and Marc Laird. Donnelly partnered Eliot Richards in attack.
