Moore eyes eighth place

TRANMERE Rovers' bring the curtain down this weekend on a Coca-Cola League One season that promised so much but ended fruitless.

Nevertheless, Prenton Park boss Ronnie Moore wants his team to finish in eighth place with a back-to-back success at Northampton on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Rovers beat Southend United 1-0 last weekend in front of 5,842 spectators at Prenton Park and end their season this Saturday with a visit to Northampton (kick-off 3pm).

Moore, whose own contract expires this Summer - he is, however, already making plans for next season - said: "We want to finish as high as we can. If we win on Saturday we finish eighth - it's as simple as that."

He added: "I'll not be tinkering too much with players and we'll not be far away from the side that played at the weekend. If we win on Saturday, we'll beat last season's points total and our final placing, so we're thriving at the moment."

Despite being out of contention for a place in the play-offs, Moore is keen to ensure that Rovers will not lose their competitive edge this weekend and is putting his squad through a busy final week's training.

"It's going to be a hard game because Northampton are a big side," he said.

"Both sides have nothing to play for, but I'd like to think that we can go there and we want to win. Every game you play, you want to win and that's what we'll be doing this weekend."

Moore is under instructions not to discuss players' contracts but admitted he is looking for goal-scoring defenders like Antony Kay, who scored the only goal of Saturday's match.

"There's no doubt Antony's a top-class footballer. He's a footballer centre-half - an Alan Hansen-type. He wants to get on the ball and play and pass it."
