Sickening night for Moore as dominant Rovers crash out of FA Cup
SICK: Ronnie Moore
SICK: Ronnie Moore

TRANMERE Rovers' boss Ronnie Moore says he is 'sick to the stomach' after the Prenton Park club's FA Cup dream came to a sickening end at Hereford United last night (Wednesday)

Rovers lost to the only goal of the game to Division Two promotion-chasing Hereford in an FA Cup third round replay.

Rovers, who are 10th in Coca-Cola League One, crashed out of what is regarded as the world's greatest club competition in front of 6,471 spectators at Edgar Street.

A goal by Hereford midfielder Simon Johnson cost Tranmere a place in the fourth round - and a home tie against Cardiff City.

Rovers became Hereford's third Division One FA Cup scalp of the season, having defeated Leeds United at Elland Road after a replay and dumped Hartlepool United 2-0 at home.

But they were second best to Tranmere last night. Rovers dominated the tie, hitting the bar and post and failing to convert several golden chances.

"We rode our luck, that's for sure," said Hereford United's Wirral-born owner and manager, Graham Turner.

"Tranmere had some chances and made us chase the ball a lot," said the former captain of Ellesmere Port Schoolboys. "But this is the FA Cup and this club has a great history of giant-killing."

This morning, a dejected Moore told me: "I'm feeling sick to the stomach to be honest - it would have been great to get through and take on Cardiff in the fourth round, but now we're not going to get the chance."

He added: "I bet the lads had about 12 or 16 shots that we didn't take up. We had the best chances, but just didn't score the goals.

"We need a 20-goal-a-season guy - I don't want to single any players out because they're doing their job, it's the goals we need."

But he added: "It's not all doom and gloom."

He praised the more than 1,000 Tranmere fans who made the trip - a fleet of 15 coaches was laid on at the Prenton Park club's expense - to Hereford.

Rovers continue their promotion push on Saturday, when they visit the capital to take on Millwall (kick-off 3pm).

Looking ahead, Moore said: "We have to keep upbeat - if we play as well as we did at Hereford, and take our chances, we'll win the game."
