Tranmere Rovers secure three vital points against Yeovil Town

YEOVIL TOWN...1

TRANMERE Rovers moved back to within touching distance of safety with a vital victory against Yeovil Town at Prenton Park.

Two goals in four minutes at the start of the second half were enough for Rovers to secure a precious three points in their quest for survival, and the hosts were full value for their victory after bossing long periods of the second half.

Les Parry’s side, who had previously gone four games without a goal, continued to look bereft of creative spark in a dour first-half.

Only striker Terry Gornell remotely threatened, firing over from close range with a fairly simple opportunity, and curling a decent left-foot effort straight at Alex McCarthy.

The goal which broke the deadlock on 48 minutes breathed life into the contest.

Chris Shuker rolled the ball into the feet of Ian Goodison, and the big centre-half held the ball up for Ian Thomas-Moore to place his shot into the bottom corner.

The home side were visibly buoyed by breaking their goal drought and netted a second just four minutes later.

In the free-kick move straight off the training ground which also proved to be Brentford’s undoing in early December – Yeovil’s players must have been the only people inside Prenton Park caught unawares – Craig Curran ran over the top of the ball 35 yards out and moved down the blind side of the defensive wall, Shuker played the ball into his path, and this time the striker squared for Ash Taylor to tap into the empty net.

Rovers were largely on top from then on, with John Welsh and Shuker testing McCarthy.

At the other end, Yeovil were barely a threat all night, although Ryan Mason netted a consolation from the penalty spot in injury time.

Globe Man of the Match: Ian Goodison – typically solid performance from the centre-half.

Tranmere: Daniels, Logan, Bakayogo, Goodison, Taylor, Shuker, Welsh, McLaren, Curran, Thomas-Moore, Gornell.
