Holt signs off on victorious home note

CALDY rounded off their home commitments for the season with a 43-23 victory over National Three North relegation-threatened Morley.

It was a big display by Caldy watched by many past players who attended a re-union luncheon.

They ran in six tries via Ben Lyon, 2, Gavin Woods, Craig Ross, John Broxton and Marcus Coast. Gavin Roberts hit five of the conversions and a penalty.

Matt Holt, making his last home appearance before retiring from playing, took the last goal kick but narrowly failed. He will stay on as coach next season.

Morley never threw in the towel. They secured three tries, two penalties and a conversion, but were a definite second best on the day.

Meanwhile, New Brighton romped to victory 55-12 against relegated Winnington Park in North Two West.

There were seven tries via Sean Ellis, Kati Tuipulotu, Mike Gallimore, Phil Buckley, Alistair Child, Wayne Clayton and Joe Bowmer. Stephen Dean converted the lot and also struck a penalty.

Anselmians are still in danger of relegation from South Lancashire and Cheshire One after a 15-34 home reverse against Wigan. Dave Edge and Mike Chapman crossed and Chris Wells hit a penalty and a conversion.

Wirral came from 0-12 down to beat Bowdon 24-12. Craig Harvey and Sam Broadbent went in. There was also a penalty try plus three conversions and a penalty via Dan Harvey.

Hoylake came close to upsetting leaders Wilmslow in a 17-20 finish after at one stage being 17 points down. Mike Young touched down twice and Matt O'Neill once. Stephen Young goaled once.

Oldershaw beat Warrington 15-5 in Division Two and Wallasey whipped Collegiate 55-0.

Tom Cubbin ran in four tries for Wallasey and Paul Lewis a brace. Ben O'Donnell, Ben Edwards and Colin McLean also touched down and Lewis hit five conversions.

Parkonians and Prenton both lost in Division Three and could go down. Parkonians were edged out 14-13 at Ellesmere Port, where Mark Hillan and Terry Williams went in. There was also a penalty, but Parkonians did not quite do enough.

Prenton found champions Douglas too strong and fell 0-17.

Port Sunlight, in Division Four, lost 29-38 at West Park Warriors.

Caldy finish their season at Hull Ionians on Saturday. Birkenhead Park go to Darlington and New Brighton entertain Broughton Park.

Other fixtures include Hoylake v Ruskin Park, Wirral at Wigan, Anselmians at Widnes, Wallasey at Oswestry, Oldershaw v Ashton-on-Mersey and a Parkonians v Prenton derby.
