Hoylake get 'most hospitable club' boost

THE Hoylake club, which not so long ago was awarded the RFU 'Seal of Approval', has now been voted the most hospitable club by the Liverpool Referees Society.

It is another boost for Hoylake, who last month officially opened their new floodlights at Melrose Avenue to back up their excellent facilities.

They were among the clubs without a game last weekend, but this Saturday trek to Sandbach for a Cheshire Vase semi-final tie. Sandbach are a league above them, so the task is difficult.

The majority of Wirral clubs are not due to play again until the end of the month in what has been a stop-start season.

Caldy, in National Three North League, chalked up another success at the weekend 27-22 at the expense of visiting Macclesfield and are now sixth in the table.

Relegation-threatened Macclesfield gave it a real go at Paton Field, but were always fighting a losing cause. Caldy registered three excellent tries through Marcus Coast, Derek Salisbury and Gareth Roberts and the latter landed the conversions and two penalties.

Macclesfield made the score respectable with a late try and goal following four penalties and a drop goal earlier.

In the first of the Floodlit Cup semi-finals at New Brighton last week, Wallasey just got home 26-23 against Parkonians, who started with a 10 points handicap advantage and played well above their league form.

The Holm Lane club looked to be home and dry at 23-12 with just minutes remaining, but Wallasey player-coach Martin Sutton broke their hearts with two late, late tries, both converted by Paul Lewis to tip the balance.

The second semi-final involving Prenton and Capenhurst is scheduled for this evening (Wednesday) at New Brighton (kick-off 7.30pm).
