Disappointment for Caldy

THERE was disappointment for Caldy as they fell to a 20-32 defeat at Otley.

It was only their second reverse of the season in National Two North and now they face impressive unbeaten leaders Stourbridge at Paton Field this coming Saturday.

A poor third quarter in a tough physical battle saw Caldy go from 6-15 to 6-32 down but then they rallied well to cut the margin without ever looking like swaying the balance.

Gavin Roberts and Stu Cross touched down for the Wirral outfit and Richard Vasey added the goals following two first-half penalties. Otley gained four tries in all plus two penalties and three conversions Little went right for Birkenhead Park in a 14-66 result at Sandal in National Three North League.

It was hardly the best of starts for new coach Sean Wooff but obviously he needs time.

Jack Ashcroft in the first period and Sean Ingram late on touched down for Park and Dave Hall landed the conversions but their defence on the day could not cope against speedy opponents.

Anselmians raised their game for a tense derby victory over Wirral in North One West. Ollie Whorton, Andrew Crebbin and Loa Topou scored tries and Simon Mason a conversion and a brace of penalties in a 23-19 outcome.

Wirral also achieved three touch downs via Sam Broadbent, Ross Page and Dan Harvey plus two goals through Craig Harvey but could not swing the balance in a frantic finish.

Hoylake in South Lancashire/Cheshire One went to town against Winnington Park at Melrose Avenue to post a 49-3 victory.

It was win number five and they lie third in the table. They managed eight tries on the day with two for Andy Fielding and singles registered by Mark Wylie, Matt O’Hanlon, Richard Young, Dan Gleeson, Ben Flint and Guy Byatt.

New Brighton moved into fourth place with a solid 32-0 success away to Orrell.

In Division Two there were defeats for Oldershaw and Wallasey. Shaw finished 8-55 down at Ormskirk whilst Wallasey found Isle of Man visitors Vagabonds just too strong in a 14-29 finish.

Port Sunlight comprehensively took the Division Three derby against Oxton Parkonians 41-6. The losers managed just a couple of penalties via Terry Williams.

Prenton found Manchester Medics too strong and succumbed 6-22 but it was better for Ellesmere Port in a 31-3 score against visiting Holmes Chapel.

There is another round of league action this coming Saturday, with 3pm kick-offs: National Two North: Caldy v Stourbridge.

National Three North: Birkenhead Park v Billingham.

North Two West: LSH v Anselmians; Wirral v Fleetwood.

South Lancashire/Cheshire One: Bowdon v Hoylake; New Brighton v Ruskin Park.
