Caldy return to winning ways
11:52am Tuesday 25th September 2012 in Rugby By Andrew Stratton
CALDY returned to winning ways in National Two North League 23-10 at the expense of visiting Luctonians.
It was never easy at Paton Field against the then division leaders but the Wirral club made a solid start to lead 14-0 by the end of the opening quarter and thereafter always looked to have the edge.
Dom Kohler and Matt Van Sertima crossed for Caldy with Richard Vasey converting each time to make it 14-0 at the interval.
A trio of second-half penalties by Vasey ensured the win but Luctonians made their presence fealt as they twice breached the Caldy rearguard in the later stages of the contest.
Birkenhead Park collected a bonus point despite a 28-58 reverse at Chester in their latest outing in National Three North League.
Martin O’Keefe touched down twice. There were also tries via Matt Ibbotson and Sean Ingram with Dave Hall converting each time but Chester with a new look side were just too strong.
Wirral in North One West were eased out 13-16 by visiting Sale but Anselmians recorded their first win 42-25 at the expense of Widnes.
Carl Hellier, Lou Topou and Nathan McHugh crossed and Simon Mason collected twenty seven points via three conversions and seven penalties.
Hoylake suffered their first defeat in South Lancashire/Cheshire One 24-33 away to Warrington.
New Brighton also lost 15-33 at Broughton Park, never quite being able to get back in contention after conceding nineteen points in the opening quarter.
Joe Cardus (2) and Kati Tuipuloto eventually gained tries but Park managed five touch downs and four conversions to ensure top place in the table.
The local derby in Division Two was a ding dong affair eventually taken by Oldershaw 16-13 at Wallasey’s Cross Lane ground.
In Division Three Port Sunlight just made it 29-28 against Liverpool University but Oxton Parkonians went under 13-17 against Manchester Medics whose winning score came in the last few minutes.
Alan Williams crossed for Parks and his brother Terry converted and also landed a brace of penalties.
The Prenton v Linley match was postponed.
Oxton Parkonians who are without a league fixture this Saturday have managed to arrange their Cheshire Plate semi-final against Isle of Man outfit Southern Nomads. There will be a 1pm kick-off at Holm Lane to facilitate travelling arrangements for the islanders.
