Cheshire one step away from County Championship final

Cheshire are one step away from a County Championship Shield final at Twickenham after a hard earned 34-18 success over Cumbria at Aspatria.

They will go to headquarters at the end of the month to meet the southern section winners provided they can see off North Midlands at Macclesfield this Saturday.

They are certainly hoping for increased support to help them in their attempt to regain a place in the main County Championship at the first opportunity after relegation last season.

The home county enjoyed much of the possession and territory at Aspatria but Cheshire in the main defended well and made the most of their scoring opportunities.

Facing the wind they secured two breakaway tries via Sam Moss and Fergus Mulchrone plus a Tom Eaton conversion.

Cumbria hit back with a drop goal and a penalty but just before the break Tom Mantell gained a third Cheshire touch down from a charged down clearance kick with Eaton adding the extras.

It seemed the visitors would go clear when Matt Simpson nipped in with Eaton goaling six minutes into the second period but two home touch downs and a conversion closed the gap to eight points and it was game on again.

Fortunately Cheshire held their nerve. Gavin Roberts steadied the ship with a penalty before David Marwick ensured the victory with the fifth try well into the final quarter.
