Rugby Union: Caldy players help Cheshire make excellent County Championship start

Cheshire with several Caldy players in their squad made an excellent start to their County Championship Shield campaign with an emphatic 61-18 victory over Leicestershire at the Vipers ground last Saturday.

The result was never really in doubt. Cheshire produced some crisp rugby and their pace behind the scrum proved decisive.

Winger Fergus Mulchrone helped himself to three of the nine Cheshire tries.

Ben Coulbeck went in twice and there were singles via Pat Leach, Gavin Woods, Ollie Hewitt and Nick Pearson.

Skipper Tom Eaton added eight of the nine conversions.

The home county never threw in the towel and were rewarded with two touch downs, two penalties and one conversion.

Cheshire are on the road again on Saturday to Aspatria to take on Cumbria and Westmorland who were edged out 22-25 by North Midlands in their opening game.

Meanwhile Wirral lifted the Cheshire Vase with a surprise 20-10 success over higher ranked Chester at New Brighton recently.

Alistair Baker and Craig Harvey scored tries. There were two conversions and a drop goal from the latter whilst Dan Harvey added a drop goal.
