WIRRAL retained their unbeaten home record but only after scoring 24 points in the final quarter to claim a thrilling 29-28 win against Stockport.

Playing against the wind in the first half, Wirral took the lead through a pushover try from captain Rob Pearl.

Fluent play from Stockport kept Wirral on the back foot and the visitors levelled in the 23rd minute with a try from Alistair Green.

In the two minutes leading up to half time, Stockport scored two further tries through Callum Baldwin and Richard Sackville-West to take a deserved 15-5 lead at the break.

The visitors had enjoyed the majority of possession and displayed good handling skills in difficult conditions.

In the first 20 minutes of the second half it got worse for Wirral as Stockport scored a further eight points though a penalty by Sackville-West and an unconverted try by Kiernan Hobbs to give them an 18-point lead.

Wirral’s comeback was sparked from the restart following Hobbs’s try. A long kick downfield was fielded by Stockport close to their line but Chris Speed, following up, mauled the ball from the player and touched down for the try.

With greater possession Wirral were now able to put some pressure on Stockport and in the space of five minutes they scored two further tries through Mark Williams and Pearl.

Stockport continued to counter-attack and scored a further try through scrum-half Sean Street following a quickly taken penalty.

The conversion was missed from virtually in front of the posts and this was to prove crucial as Stockport led 28-22.

The Wirral forwards surged towards the whitewash but were denied by the collapsing Stockport scrum.

The ball came out and after a number of thrusts a crash ball to Sam Broadbent saw the centre score close to the posts.

The conversion from Dan Harvey gave Wirral the dramatic victory.
