DESPITE injuries and last minute changes, Wirral had to work hard in the first half playing against the breeze and an enthusiastic Burnage side eager to get their first win of the season.

It was Burnage who took the early lead with a penalty in the seventh minute, but Wirral gradually built up pressure and were rewarded with a penalty try just before half time, duly converted by Dan Harvey to give the away side a 3-7 lead at the break.

The second half began with Rhys Evans of Burnage scoring his second penalty to bring the margin down to one point, 6-7.

Thereafter all the pressure came from Wirral with scrum half, Josh Stead scoring his first senior try, converted by Harvey.

It was not until the 65th minute that Wirral ensured victory with a well-executed move which saw Matt Loon score, converted to extend the Wirral lead to 6-21.

Wirral were now in full control earning their bonus point with a Sam Broadbent try, quickly followed by tries from Jack Yarker and Adam Sheldon, none were converted.

Given the changes that had to be made on the morning of this match and a ground on which they had not won for some years, this was a heartening performance by this young Wirral team.
