CALDY were involved in a thriller in their latest outing in National Two North League.

Honours were even in a 26-26 conclusion at Otley, leaving the Wirral side sitting in fourth place in the table, just behind Cheshire rivals Chester but well adrift of the leading two clubs in the division.

A game of changing fortunes eventually earned Caldy a three point return but rugby manager Gareth Davies fealt it should have been five after an impressive showing.

The visitors lost stand-off Richard Vasey with a hamstring problem after only five minutes and found themselves trailing 0-12 to a try and two penalties before a Stu Cross touch down plus the goal by Gavin Roberts made it 7-12 at the half way stage.

Caldy powered to a 26-12 advantage in the third quarter with Dom Kohler twice and Ben Jones breaching the home rearguard and Roberts converting twice.

It seemed all over but Otley refused to lie down and registered two converted tries in the last quarter to even things out.

Gareth Davies said: "We are disappointed really. We should not have let a fourteen points advantage slip away".

Wirral played a re-arranged National Three North match away to Sheffield Tigers but will probably be wishing they had stayed at home.

They managed just one penalty via James Annetts in a 3-50 thrashing.

It was only 3-11 at the half way stage but the Tigers showed their teeth later and Wirral had no answer.

The winners in all scored seven tries and it was a long road home for Wirral who under performed on the day.

Anselmians went down 15-30 at Glossop in South Lancashire/Cheshire One.

In Division Three Ellesmere Port accounted for visiting Capenhurst 39-15 but Oxton Parkonians were on the wrong side of a 15-35 score at Linley.

There is a full league programme this Saturday.

Caldy take the road to Coventry to meet Broadstreet whilst Wirral have home advantage against Billingham.

Birkenhead Park and New Brighton both travel to Lancashire with Broughton Park and Eccles the respective venues.

Other fixtures include Anselmians at Bowdon, Hoylake v Manchester, Port Sunlight v Oswestry, Prenton v Orrell, Ellesmere Port v Wallasey and Oldershaw v Oxton Parkonians.
