LOWLY Broadstreet gave Caldy plenty to think about at Paton Field before the Wirral side edged the verdict 14-12 in National Three North League, thanks to a brace of tries from winger Ben Eaves and two immaculate conversion kicks by Richard Vasey.

Broadstreet collected a losing bonus point and probably fealt they deserved more.

It certainly would have been better for them but for missing a relatively simple kick at a vital stage.

Caldy just like the previous week aganst Otley dug deep when they had to for a sixth win of the campaign which lifts them into seventh place in the division.

The visitors against the breeze dominated for much of the first quarter without being able to open their account.

Caldy showed them how in the 43rd minute when a fine break by Dom Kholer set up a corner touch down for Eaves with the extras from Vasey.

Broadstreet responded five minutes later with the forwards driving over from a line-out after a penalty kick to the corner.

James Harrop was credited with the score and Ben Cooper kicked the goal to level things out.

Almost immediately Caldy were back in front. Eaves was again over in the corner after a half break by Craig Smithson.

Vasey kept his composure to add what proved a crucial conversion again from the touchline.

Both sides had their attacking moments in the second-half but defences continued to dominate.

The visitors weathered a period down to fourteen men and then set up an interesting finale as Nick Thatcher burst over from a quickly taken tap penalty which caught Caldy unawares.

Luckily for the home side the conversion was missed but there were still anxious moments to follow as the visitors searched for a winning score.

Amazingly Broadstreet opted for a corner kick instead of a kick at goal with only a few minutes remaining.

They could not capitalise and then made crucial errors as the last moments ticked by.

On this form Broadstreet must surely climb away from the relegation zone.

Caldy meanwhile have a great chance to further advance up the table when bottom club Stockport come to the Wirral for a Cheshire derby this Saturday.

But they must be careful as the East Cheshire outfit seem sure to have been boosted by a first win last weekend at the expense of Huddersfield.

Wallasey were the only other local side in league acton and easily accounted for winless Helsby 60-5 at Cross Lane.

It lifts them alongside Oldershaw just behind leaders Ramsey - a creditable turn round after a disastrous 2013/14 season.

There is a return to full league action this Saturday.

Wirral journey to Westoe and Birkenhead Park to Wilmslow with New Brighton welcoming Warrington to Hartsfield.

Anselmians and Hoylake are both on the road to Altrincham Kersal and Northwich respectively.

Other matches include Port Sunlight at Marple, Prenton v Tyldesley, Ellesmere Port v Knutsford, Oxton Parkonians at Ramsey (Isle of Man) and Wallasey v Helsby.

Oldershaw do not have a league encounter this time round.
