WIRRAL recorded their first home league win of the season and having the comfort of achieving their try bonus point before half time.

Wirral were quickly into the lead after early pressure when Ali Baker intercepted a Beverley pass some 40m out and ran in his try unopposed before Beverley hit back with a long range penalty.

For the next 15 minutes both teams had opportunities to score and play was balanced.

In the final 15 minutes of the half, the home side ran in three further tries through, Dan Harvey, Adam Sheldon and Ali Baker but with virtually the last play of the first half a good backs move left Beverley fullback, Mile Kilgannon with an easy run in to the corner to leave the score 27-8 in Wirral's favour at half-time.

With the slight wind advantage in the second half, Wirral increased their lead with a push over try by Paul Lewis and a superb try by Adam Sheldon after a defence splitting break by James Annetts to extend the lead to 39-8 after 53 minutes.

In the next 20 minutes, with Wirral taking their foot off the pedal, Beverley staged a comeback scoring three converted tries through Richard Bassey (2) and George Reynard, all of which were converted by Phil Duboulay.

There was concern amongst the Wirral team at this comeback by Beverley which had been brought on by their own errors but in the final minutes of the game, the forwards controlled the ball as they moved up field to see out the game, even missing a penalty opportunity in the process.

Wirral now move up a place in this league but more importantly are now in touch with the teams directly above them.
