WIRRAL pulled off a surprise but well-deserved win against Morley to gain their first win in the National League.

It was Morley who set off at breakneck speed with 15 man rugby and although the attacks were stemmed, Wirral were down to 13 men within 10 minutes following two yellow cards for high tackles.

Morley took advantage of this situation by scoring their first try after 14 minutes.

Further problems for Wirral occurred when centre, Phil Donaldson left the field with a serious shoulder injury. Nine minutes the lead was increased to 12-0 with another try.

Gradually with more possession Wirral came back into the game and taking advantages of lapses in Morley’s concentration scored two tries through Sam Broadbent and Craig Harvey with the latter converting his own try to leave the score at half time 12-12.

At the start of the second half it was Wirral who took the initiative and kept Morley in their own half for some 15 minutes by precise kicking to touch, during which Wirral extended their lead to 22-12 with all the points being scored by captain, Craig Harvey.

Morley came back into the game by scoring two tries within a 4 minute period with attacking play, as seen in the first half, to open up a 22-26 lead.

With seven minutes remaining, Wirral retook the lead when Dan Harvey put in Ali Baker to score under the posts, 29-26 to the away team.

Morley again went ahead in the 78th minute with a penalty try when Wirral were deemed to have deliberately handled the ball over the dead ball line. 29-33.

In the last minute of injury time, Morley had the put in at the scrum but Wirral front row, Jason Green, Matt Brown and Jack Yarker, took their third heel against the head and three passes later saw Ali Baker beat two defenders to dive over in the corner to earn a memorable victory for Wirral; the referee then blew for time.
