AN impressive victory over Liverpool St Helens - the first ever by Wirral in its 76-year history - was achieved through all-round team play and pace in the backs, writes Richard McNeil.

Wirral took the lead in the fourth-minute when Ali Baker intercepted an LSH move to score under the posts.

After 15 minutes, the advantage was extended to 3-14 when captain Craig Harvey scored.

LSH replied with a Greg Smith penalty before Colin Dyer forced his way over to increase the lead to 3-21.

LSH hit back with a well-taken try by Jake Hodson to leave the half-time score at 10-21.

After the break, LSH took control of the game for ten minutes with a penalty, followed by a forwards' inspired try through Rob Dyer to close the deficit to 18-21

But Wirral, with a greater share of possession, regained the initiative with four tries in ten minutes through Ali Baker, Matt Loon and James Annetts; one conversion and a penalty stretched the lead to 18-43.

LSH were now striving to earn a try bonus point, but keen tackling by Wirral kept them out until Jimmy Laycock crossed for their third try.

Wirral immediately replied when Ali Baker scored a further try. 68 minutes saw Wirral's final through Ali Baker, his fourth to round off a truly professional performance.

In the final minutes, Wirral continued to attack and LSH were relieved to hear the final whistle.
