THERE was disappointment for Caldy as they just missed out in the National Two North League Cheshire derby at home to Chester.

There was never much between the sides in a game played on the second pitch at Paton Field due to cricket arrangements and everything hinged on a last ditch long range penalty effort by Richard Vasey for Caldy.

Sadly, the ball just sailed wide and Chester kicked dead for no-side and a 14-12 success.

It might have been a different story had Caldy kept their full compliment.

They found themselves down to fourteen men for the last quarter after a red card for lock Chris Jones at a time when the sides were locked together at 9-9.

It was all penalties with three for Rhys Hayes of Chester and the same number for Vasey.

It seemed Caldy might sneak home when Vasey’s fourth kick made it 12-9 with nine minutes remaining but Chester rallied to good purpose and scored a superbly worked corner try via Sean Green in the 77th minute after excellent link up play involving Hayes and Tom Foden.

It was hardly a memorable derby with mistakes from both sides but Caldy can take heart from a hard working performance and their first win should not be far away.

Birkenhead Park had a successful trip to Carlisle to record their second success in North One West League.

They were in command for most of the eighty minutes and the 29-12 score did them scant justice.

Billy Wooff and Greg Hughes after a fifty metre dash scored first-half Park tries and Dave Hall a conversion and a penalty.

Hall added the points to a Gavin Scott touch down soon after half-time and then a flowing move culminated in a second try for Hughes with the extras from Hall.

Park camped in the home 22 for much of the final quarter without further reward before Carlisle grabbed a consolation converted try in added time to add to a first-half touchdown.

Wirral also enjoyed a good afternoon with a 19-5 success at Kirby Lonsdale.

Matt Brown, Chris Speed and Keith Mahon breached the home rearguard and Dan Harvey goaled twice.

Kirby Lonsdale were restricted to a couple of penalties.

New Brighton went to town at Manchester in South Lancashire/Cheshire One to record a 62-12 victory.

It was a ten try bonanza. Vinny Dutton crossed three times and Joe Silcock twice.

There were singles for Anthony Birley, Ned Brooks, Jack Charlesworth, Alan Hesketh and Brett Williams. Birley converted four times and Charlesworth on two occasions.

Anselmians edged a tight encounter against Wigan 20-19 at Malone Field but Hoylake just missed out 16-20 at Ruskin Park.

Port Sunlight in Division Two fell 5-17 at Southport and it was not a good day for Wallasey in a 0-70 thrashing at home to Collegiate.

Oxton Parkonians cruised in 78-12 at home to Linley in Division Three and Ellesmere Port came away 30-15 to the good from Capenhurst.

Terry Williams with three led the Parkonians try spree. Geoff Waters and Paul Lennon enjoyed two apiece with singles via Alan Williams, Andy Smith, Martin Sharkey, Craig Whelan and Danny Blyth. Ben Sadler landed nine goals.

The Prenton v Holmes Chapel match was postponed whilst Oldershaw did not have a fixture.

Caldy are on the road to Leicester Lions for their next match in National Two North this Saturday.

In North One West, there are home fixtures for Birkenhead Park against Kendal and Wirral against Leigh.

Fixtures in the various divisions of South Lancashire/Cheshire League include Ashton on Mersey v Anselmians, Hoylake v Tyldesley, New Brighton v Northwich, Dukinfield v Wallasey, Port Sunlight v Manchester Medics, Ellesmere Port v Oldershaw, Knutsford v Prenton and Liverpool University v Oxton Parkonians.
