NEW Brighton rounded off their season in South Lancashire / Cheshire One League with a 65-24 thrashing of Orrell at Hartsfield on Saturday - finishing fourth in the division.

No other local sides were in action, but Cheshire with players from Caldy and Birkenhead Park in their ranks just held on for victory in a nailbiting finale against Durham at Gateshead.

A golden third-quarter spell put Cheshire in the driving seat at 31-10 but then they had a player sin binned and Durham produced a whirlwind finish.

They needed to land a conversion with the last kick to draw but the ball sailed wide and Cheshire celebrated a 31-29 win.

Each side scored four tries and a penalty with four conversions for Cheshire and just three for the home county.

Danny Rich of Birkenhead Park was amongst the Cheshire men to cross.

Their last game in the Northern Group is against Lancashire at Macclesfield this Saturday.

Lancashire have won both their matches to date including a 35-25 victory over Yorkshire on Saturday and will be favourites to qualify for the play-off for the Bill Beaumont Trophy.
