Harvey seals Wirral comeback

Altrincham Kersal - 12 Wirral - 18

WIRRAL continued their unbeaten 2013 record with a seventh consecutive win but had to come back from a 12-5 deficit to maintain their record, writes Richard McNeil.

Whilst Altrincham Kersal (AK) started the stronger using their speedy wings it was Wirral who scored first following pressure from their forwards and quick ball to the backs enabling James Annetts to outpace the defence to score.

Over the next 20 minutes AK hit back with two well taken tries through wingers Tony O'Connor and Jack Wise and a conversion to lead 12-5.

Wirral continued to apply pressure and in the period before half time were able to cut the deficit to 12-11 through two well taken penalty goals from Craig Harvey.

Against the wind in the second half, Wirral continued to apply pressure but could not break through AK's well organized defence, even after having a number of scrums on the home side's line.

Eventually the breakthrough came when captain, Craig Harvey probed the opposition back line and from 15m out powered over under the posts, he duly converted.

With only one score between the teams the final 20 minutes were full of tension as both teams strove for that next score; however Wirral were able to ride out the storm to achieve this win which sees Wirral climb to fifth in the league.
