Carlsberg West Cheshire League: Mallaby complete the double over Bebington Athletic

UNBEATEN Mallaby eroded South Liverpool's advantage at the top of the Carlsberg West Cheshire League Division Two to just a single point after they completed a league double over Bebington Athletic.

Hero of the hour was pint-sized striker John Hedges whose second-half hat-trick anchored his side to a 5-0 triumph. Further efforts from John Coulter and Christian Stewart completed the scoreline.

Heswall Reserves spurned the chance to assume pole position and dropped to third place after they were undone by a solitary strike from Ashville Reserves' Peter Wright, while Helsby stayed in the promotion equation thanks to a 3-2 result at Maghull Reserves.

Ian Cox (2) and Steve O'Brien netted for the winners, with Adam Pearson and Billy Rice in reply for the hosts.

Trevor Worsley and Peter Rutter applied the finishing touches as Willaston eclipsed Prescot Cables Reserves 2-1 and Mossley Hill Athletic Reserves accounted for Richmond Raith Rovers by the same scoreline, courtesy of a smart double from Phil Duncan.

Singles from Kenny Gambo and Danny O'Connor were enough, as Marshalls posted a 2-0 win at Mersey Royal.

Both goalkeepers were kept busy as Hale emerged 8-5 victors over Marine Reserves in Division One.

Hale were indebted to efforts from James Standish (3), Josh Doran, Brad Williams, Andy Cashmore, Phil Doran and Sean Calland, for their second win of the season. Rob Doran bagged a hat-trick for the visitors.

Despite a Phil Coffin double, bottom club Ellesmere Port went down 3-2 at home to replies from Mossley Hill Athletic's Kurt Sherlock, Robbie McCarthy and Yusuf Malik.

In midweek, third-placed Cammell Laird Reserves moved to within two points of leaders Heswall after they romped home 6-1 against Vauxhall Motors Reserves.

Saturday's Division Three action saw leaders Redgate Rovers drop two points after they had Craig Blackwell (2) and Sam Corlett on target but finished 3-3 with promotion rivals Christleton Reserves. Terry Keenan, Mark Nokes, and Ashley Male obliged for the Chester outfit.

There was no stopping Alex Clare who struck five times as Neston Nomads put Chester Nomads Reserves to the sword in a 6-2 rout and Belfry also bagged up as three goal Jamie Rainford left his calling card in the 6-1 decision over Bebington Athletic Reserves.

Goals from Merseyside Police's Dan Heaton and John McAllister were nullified by replies from Upton AA Reserves ' Geoff Abraham and Nick Smith, while Widnes Town owed their 4-0 triumph over Ellesmere Port Reserves to efforts from Will Myers, Kevin Dunning, Niall Donnelly and Luke Colford.

Sam Smith was a two-goal hero for Custy's who celebrated a 4-1 result over Ramsbottom Town in the Youth Division.

Johnny Dowling and Joel Burns also made the scoresheet and Ben Hughes scored for the visitors.

Kristian O'Reilly's superb hat-trick had the desired effect, as Gateacre Youth trounced AFC Liverpool 6-0 in the Liverpool County FA Youth Cup first-round.

West Kirby Reserves pulled off the result of the round in the Gallagher & Haworth Bowl first-round after they put paid to strongly-fancied Division Two pacesetter South Liverpool. Dave Bowe and James Broadbent netted in Saturday's 2-1 triumph.

Tom Fellows, Todd Reid and Jamie McElwaine netted for Upton AA who beat Uberlube 3-0 in the Chester & District FA Senior Cup first-round, and it was celebration time for Division One rivals Christleton who went through after goals from James Stevenson (2), Adam and Thelwell-Wilson clinched a 3-1 result at Greyhound Inn.

Neil Roach, Ross Kennedy and Francis Evans were the marksmen, after South Liverpool Reserves won 3-2 against Haydock in the Liverpool County FA Junior Cup first-round.
