Houlihan’s Sunday League: Birkenhead Sunday League sides put on good show in Premier Cup

THE Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday League was well represented in the Wirral District Premier Cup first-round, with Laird’s Sports Club beating Tixall Prenton 7-4.

Paul Leay netted a hat-trick and Dava Lyons, Ryan Lawson, Ally Major and Robby Roberts were all on target.

Birkenhead Youth B beat Cheshire Cheese 6-2 thanks to a Scott Connolly double and efforts from Duong, Povall, Dillon and Wellman.

Chris Riley scored twice for Queens Park, adding to goals from Robby Courtenay, Stewie Jackson and Mikey Purnell, as they knocked out Westminster 5-1.

Heygarth (Mark Price) needed extra-time and a Steve Forbes hat-trick to eventually see off Shaftesbury Youth A (Mike Ballard) 4-1.

Lancelyn Glenavon fell 2-0 against Victoria Seniors, as did Lions against Grace Arms. Argyll went out 3-0 at Kent.

In the Wirral Amateur Cup first-round, Ashville Old Boys (Lindfield. 2, Randles, Shone, Miller) went through 5-3 at Bronze and a Paul Rowlands hat-trick secured a 3-1 victory for FC Ellies against Cetco Europe.

Billy Richards hit four goals for Millcroft (McKeown, 2, Hutton) as they ran out 7-2 winners at Astra Athletic and AFC Houlihans won a place in Round 2 with goals from Hoyle, Kendrick and Miller, in a 3-0 win at Grange Moreton.

Farmers Arms Moreton (W. Palethorpe) went out 6-1 against Shore Villa and Merebrook were beaten 3-1 despite a Colin Parry strike.

Shore Villa had doubles from Mark Rand and John Paul Wheadon added to an Adam Lea effort, in a 5-3 success over Stirrup Sports & Social (Paul Devey, 2, Kevin Woods); this moves Villa level on points at the top of the Premier Division.

Two goals from Richie Owens and one from Steve Jones were enough to give Rock Ferry Social the points in a 3-2 result over Brow (Dave Lee, John Cassidy).

Armchair Alliance kept up their 100% start to the campaign with Robert Marrs and Ian Wakefield scoring in a 2-0 defeat of FC Ridger Athletic.

Also unbeaten are Allport Athletic, winning 2-0 at Shawcross thanks to a Jacques Bonfrer double.

Mike Bowe and Ryan Cox hit hat-tricks as Eswa (Rose, 2, Rooke, Hobbs) hit 10 against Woodward, to stay in the leading pack.

Old Parkonians (Tom Briggs, 2, Ben Kierman 2, Liam Furber) came from 4-1 down to beat Rangers Breaks (Dave Duffield, Steve Ellis, Liam Roberts, Carl Roberts) 5-4 and FC Vaults (Tyrer) won with the only goal against New Ferry Rangers. Beechwood Falcons (Kelvin Phoenix) drew 1-1 with Wirral Spartans.

In the Youth Division, Cammell Laird Youth continued their good form, this time winning 4-1 at Ashville Colts (Ryan Clarke), thanks to efforts from Matty Holden, Jack Challinor, Jack Roberts and Kyle Bennet.

A Sean Deehan hat-trick for Glenavon Colts was enough as Danny Allen (2), James Barry, Lewis McNight and Alfie Bolderson scored for Shore Villa Youth in a 5-3 win.

Adam Leet score two and Alex Williams one as Glenavon Youth defeated Vauxhall Youth 3-1; Scott Blades grabbing the consolation for Vauxhall.
