FREE-scoring Helsby trumpeted their challenge in the race for the Carlsberg West Cheshire League's Division One title, after they pulled off a superb 4-2 victory over Maghull.
Doubles from Gary Lunt and Jamie Bignall secured the result, as last season's Division Two champions moved to within six points of current leaders, Runcorn Town, with a game in hand. Ryan Liggot and Lee Tynan replied for the Maghull.
Upton AA's losing sequence was interrupted, after Simon Andrews claimed the game's only goal in a keenly contested tussle at Castrol Social, and that overdue win saw the beleaguered Chester outfit pull three points clear of the bottom two.
Division Two leaders, Southport Trinity, had Ian Lewis on the mark, but suffered a shock 3-1 home defeat to Bebington Ath, who profited thanks to efforts from Graeme Carvell(2) and John Oliver.
Title favourites, Chester Nomads, were given a run for their money by Capenhurst Villa, before goals from Ilya Hancock, Kieran Smith and Dale Harris secured a 3-2 decision.
A solitary strike from Matt Murphy enabled New Brighton to take maximum spoils from their trip to Maghull Res, while Ashville's 2-0 triumph at Mallaby was confirmed by a goal apiece from Adam Corless and Andy Kingham.
Second-placed Mossley Hill Ath. forfietd two points, after they were held 0-0 at West Kirby Res, which allowed Marshalls to close ground, after Joe Dixon(2) Sean Robinson and Joe McNulty found the net in the 4-2 success at Grange Ath. Kevin Fields and Sean Johnston scored the hosts' consolations.
Elsewhere, ninety minutes failed to produce a goal between Bronze Social and Heswall Res.
Hale stayed a point in credit at the top of Division Three, after they beat third placed Ashville Res. 4-2, with goals from Paul Hart, Wayne Smith, Fassili Poza and Harry Edwards.
A shell-shocked Southport Trinity Res were left reeling after they slumped to a 14-0 mauling at the hands of second placed Runcorn Town Res Seven goal James McShane was tormentor in chief, while further efforts from Aaron Stafford(2) Mark McGrath, Dave Craven, Ged Bushell, Jack Burbridge and an own goal completed the statistics.
Nick Cushing and Steve Morgan scored two each as fourth placed Christleton Res stayed in the mix after they won 6-0 against Mersey Royal.
Bottom club, Blacon YC Res excelled for the second week running after two goal Damian Rowley shone in the 2-1 eclipse of Manor Ath. Chester rivals, Upton AA Res. won by the same scoreline against Mossley Hill Ath Res courtesy of a goal apiece from Nathan Freeman and Jack Warne.
Widnes Town stayed five points clear of the chasing pack in the Youth Division, after Dan Whalley and Mike Jones netted in a narrow 2-1 win at Hale, but nearest rivals, South Liverpool maintained interest, after they won 4-0 at Marshalls, with goals from Phil Dunning, Adam Jameson, Robbie Alexander and Jordan Wilkie.
Despite a fine goal from Niall Brown, Mayfield were undone by replies from Mount Ath's Matty Ferrie and Eddie Toner.
A hat trick from Alan Kelly was supplemented by further efforts from Owen Duffy and John Humphreys as fourth placed Maghull thumped third placed challengers, St Sebastians, 5-1.
On the minus side, Alan Bull bagged both goals, but was left crestfallen after the West Cheshire AFL went down 3-2 at home to the Yorkshire Old Boys AFL in the FA National League Systems Cup quarter finals.
