CAMMELL Laird produced another decent away performance in the space of only a few days as they defeated a good quality Marine side in the second Round of the Liverpool Senior Cup.

Laird's, having put together a run of six wins in seven games now in all competitions are looking the team that many thought that they would be at the beginning of the season.

They started well, and they are playing the game the right way spreading the ball about and looking like they have an increased sense of urgency going forwards but overall they seem to have their confidence back and have re-discovered an urge to go for goal.

It was Marine who carved out the first chance of the game though as Jamie Rainford latched on to a ball played back from the by-line on an early Marine sortie forwards.

Lairds themselves created early chances with a headed effort from Aaron Bowen forcing Jamie Speare in the Marine goal to make a switch reach out to block.

Shaun Tuck also troubled the keeper twice in a five minute spell at 25 minutes, firstly cutting inside his marker to fire just wide then shortly after firing in an effort which hit the junction of post and crossbar with the keeper calmly shaking his head immediately after to indicate to fans behind the goal that he "Had it covered".

Lairds continued to look lively with former Liverpool Reserve Ryan Wignall who joined the club earlier this season from the North West Counties level looking the part in the blue shirt, twice bursting forwards beating at least two markers but his end product was just wide of the goal on both counts.

Another opportunity shortly afterwards as a Lairds attempt at a cross deflected off defender Michael Jackson goalwards and Speare made a superb run backwards and almost cat-like leap to palm the ball away from the gaping goal in a thriller of a move but the half finished all square and goal-less but it did not lack for quality.

In the second half, Lairds increased the urgency level and almost from the outset had Marine a goal behind, Lairds pressing forwards in a move shortly after the kick off which saw Wignall in a small amount of space and his effort was fired in to the net to give the visitors a deserved lead.

The game was a fair spectacle as both sides were working hard to create chances, Marine forwards Joe Fowler and Liam Rushton working hard to try and breakdown a resolute Lairds defence.

On 79 minutes, Lairds extended their lead after Marine conceded a penalty after more good work from Lairds, Shaun Tuck stepping forward and slotting the penalty away with stealth and accuracy and a celebration that was as outrageous as it was unexpected but thankfully the officials saw the funny side of things!

The game played out and it was Lairds who left the game with a 2-0 away win but a win that they deserved for their efforts and creativity against a team a Division higher than them but it did leave Lairds fans thinking about their relegation last season and thinking.... what if?
