TWO cups and one division championship were decided on a day of high drama in the CWFL this weekend.

Birkenhead Town are the winners of the CWFL Roodee Web Designs Tom Gerraghty Memorial Trophy.

They beat Newton Athletic 3-2 after extra-time in the day’s early kick off at the Rivacre Stadium, home of Vauxhall Motors FC. Dan Christian and man-of-the-match Liam Bradley had given Newton a 2-0 lead until an own goal brought Birkenhead back into the game.

Birkenhead then took control of the game after the introduction of sub Lee Gibson who scored to force the tie into extra-time.

Gibson hit a second in the first period of extra-time to secure a fantastic win for the Town.

Birkenhead will now focus on their remaining two league games to try and secure a league and cup double.

In the day’s second final Samba FC had John Britton to thank for scoring the goal that saw them lift their first ever silverware, the CWFL Goals Chester Cayzer Shield.

In a tight encounter with Elton Rigger, Britton’s goal was the only one of the game in a tense afternoon of football.

In the CWFL Doug Johnson Memorial Trophy semi-finals Blacon Youth Vets and Tattenhall Vets both produced the goods to win their respective games.

Blacon had Lee McElmeel (3), Vernon Keep and Danny Tushingham on target in their 5-1 victory over Dee Rangers Vets while a Stuart Rain effort and an own goal were the difference between Tattenhall and Nags Head Vets, with Tattenhall eventually running out 2-1 winners.

Blacon and Tattenhall will now face off in the final, to be played on Saturday at the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium, home of Chester FC.

Kick off is at 3pm.

This game will be preceded by the Dee 106.3 League Cup final that will be contested between Blacon Thistle and third-placed Premier Division side Ellesmere Port FC.
