WIRRAL Schoolboys U14 football team enjoyed a successful Easter weekend winning the Manchester Cup Football tournament with an impressive run of results.

Held over two days in Wythenshawe, the tournament saw teams from England, Ireland and Scotland compete with five group games culminating in a final between the top two teams.

The boys representing Wirral won each of their group games over the Saturday and Sunday with strong performances to take them to the final against Dungannon United Youth from Northern Ireland.

After a delay due to Storm Katie passing through and with strong wind and rain, the final was played with a high level of intensity which saw the team from Wirral control the game with good possession and a strong attacking approach.

With goals from Liam Atherton and George Nugent, Wirral beat their opponents 2:0 to be crowned well deserved winners of the 2016 Manchester Cup.

Association director and team manager Will Rowlands said "The boys should be very proud of their efforts over the course of the weekend.

"As a group we are constantly learning and improving and we hope this will be a catalyst for some end of season success.

"Although I don't like to throw the spotlight on anyone in particular I would like to pay tribute to the support of Lee Robinson who assists me greatly and has done since the group was formed at U13 level."

Wirral SFA U14s are back in action this weekend when they entertain Liverpool SFA in a Merseyside league fixture at Heswall FC, kick off on Saturday is 10am.
