FOOTBALLERS from a Wirral school took part a charity five-a-side match in memory of heroic Wirral policeman Dave Phillips.

Featuring year 9 boys from St Mary’s Catholic College in Wallasey Village – which was part of PC Phillips' beat – it was part of a series of fundraising activities, which include cake sales and raffles.

The pupils were awarded medals commemorating the policeman's life.

The married father of two young daughters died while on duty last month.

An investigation into his death is underway.

The popular officer, 34, served with Merseyside Police on Wirral for nearly 10 years and was buried with full honours and a funeral service at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral.

Head of Year 9 and PE teacher Mrs Nicola Lam, who organised the football tournament, told the Globe: "The death of PC Phillips has deeply affected our whole school community, and he has been remembered in special assemblies and in other activities.

"The football tournament was another way to honour him, and boys who took part now have medals to remember the occasion."

The medals, engraved with the words 'In Memory of PC Phillips 2015’, plus an engraved trophy, were donated by Capitol Solutions in Liscard.
