INSPIRED by a sparkling double from Mark Noakes, form side Vauxhall Motors assumed pole position in the race for the Carlsberg West Cheshire League’s Division One title after they overcame a resilient Chester Nomads 2-1.

Never easy to turn over, Nomads replied via Dale Harris but it was the 2003 champions who profited and opened up a two-point lead.

Division Two leaders Richmond Raith Rovers hit top form against Willaston with a 6-1 result with strikes from Jonathan Parkinson (2), Jay McDonald, Dom Gilchrist, Sean Maddocks and Jay Fraser.

Goals from Van Gelder (2), Jamie Brady and Aston Browning helped leaders Belfry Youth to an impressive to a 4-1 win Maghull Youth in the Youth Division, while Vauxhall Motors Youth were also jubilant, after Liam Richardson, Gerald Matsa and Louis Gouldson bagged a goal apiece in their side’s 3-2 result over second placed Litherland Remyca Youth.

Saturday’s Wirral & District FA Senior Cup first round action saw two goal Andy Kingam take the plaudits as Heswall sealed a 3-1 extra time victory over local rivals Capenhurst Villa.

A solitary strike from Ben Kearney earned Cammell Laird 1907 Reserves the nod over Newton, while doubles from John Hedges and Joe Conchie anchored Mallaby to a 4-2 result at battlers Shaftesbury YC.

John Pomfritt’s goal was enough for Mersey Royal to see off Ellesmere Port Town but Rob Cottrell’s double counted for nothing, after Neston Nomads lost 3-2 at home to Ellesmere Port.

Elsewhere, West Kirby & Wasps progressed after they won 2-1 against Ashville.

In the Wirral & District FA Amateur Cup first round it was a successful day for Capenhurst Villa Reserves, West Kirby & Wasps Reserves and Vauxhall Motors Reserves, who went through after dismissing Newton Reserves, Ellesmere Port Town Reserves, and Ashville Reserves respectively.

Congratulations also to minnows Mersey Royal Youth who won 3-1 at Samba in the Wirral & District Fa’s Junior Cup first round, and to Southport Trinity, who recorded a 6-2 triumph over Peel Park in the Lancashire Amateur Shield.
