TRANMERE Rovers' manager Micky Adams says his squad is ready for what promises to be a 'tough' FA Cup first round match against Bristol Rovers this weekend.

The fixture, at Prenton Park will be the 30th time the two clubs have met, with Bristol Rovers holding a 15 wins to nine advantage.

During a press conference at the club, Adams said he will treat the game exactly the same as a league game.

The clubs have met just once in the FA Cup previously, with Tranmere winning 2-0 in the second round in 1931-32 thanks to goals from Sammy Meston and Ernie Dixon.

The only other cup meeting between Tranmere and Bristol Rovers was the 1989-90 Leyland DAF Cup Final at Wembley Stadium which Johnny King's side won 2-1, the goals coming from Jim Steel and Ian Muir.

The last league meeting between the clubs was at Prenton Park in March 2011, with a Chris Lines goal earning the visitors a 1-0 win.

Players who have represented both clubs include Steve Yates, Mark McChrystal, Ryan Brunt, Mark Hughes, Keith Williams and Gareth Taylor.

Adams said: "It's just a normal week, they've worked as hard as they possibly can again.

"They say there's not a lot of difference between the top end of the Conference and the league we play in.

"Looking at the Conference, Bristol Rovers are the stand out big club. The fanbase they can attract and have done this season tells you they're a big club at that level.

"It's a tough fixture for us but any fixture is tough when you're second bottom of the Football League.

"But that doesn't tell the whole story, over the last few games we've shown enough strength of character and I would like to hope that we're in an upward spiral.

"We need to show our league class and take the game to them if we possibly can.

"I wouldn't say the FA Cup is the sort of platform to experiment.

"A cup run, while it would be great for confidence and belief as it would mean we're winning games, you have to consider the revenue and what that does to the football club as well. The FA Cup at this level should be treated with the respect it deserves.

"It's a competition we would like to progress in, and if by getting a win it would breed confidence and we could take it into the league form."

Rovers' goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams is ready for the challenge of Saturday's game, which kicks off at 3pm.

During the press conference, he said: "The FA Cup is the underdog's cup. Who's to know where Tranmere could end up?

"The fans were right behind us last Saturday. As a team we are creating a hell of a lot more chances.

"It's more exciting for the fans and that's a boost to the players.

"If we can beat Bristol Rovers here on Saturday, it will be perfect."

Fon Williams has been called up for the Wales squad for their Euro 2016 qualifier against Belgium next week. The keeper is part of Chris Coleman's 25-man squad for the game which takes place at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels on Sunday 16 November, kick off 5pm.

Though Fon Williams has been a regular in the Wales squad over the past two and a half years, he is yet to make his international debut.
